DST vs PES: Understanding Embroidery File Formats

When you receive a digitized embroidery file, it usually comes with a three-letter extension like .DST or .PES. But what do these letters mean? Why are there so many different formats, and which one does your specific machine need? Let's break down the two most popular embroidery file formats in the world.

What is a DST File?

The DST format was created by Tajima, one of the oldest and most respected manufacturers of commercial embroidery machines. Over the years, DST has essentially become the universal language of the embroidery industry.

• Universality: Almost every commercial embroidery machine (and many home machines) can read a DST file, regardless of the brand.
• Data contained: DST files are purely mechanical. They tell the machine X and Y coordinates (where to move the hoop) and when to drop the needle, jump, or trim.
• The catch: DST files do not contain color information. When you load a DST file, your machine will assign default colors. You must manually program the color sequence into your machine based on the production worksheet provided by your digitizer.

What is a PES File?

The PES format is proprietary to Brother and Bernina machines, which dominate the home and prosumer embroidery market.

• Rich Data: Unlike DST, PES files contain extensive metadata. They store not just stitches, but also thread colors, design names, and machine-specific instructions.
• Convenience: When you load a PES file, the colors often appear correctly on your machine's screen, making setup much faster for beginners.
• Limitation: Commercial multi-head machines (like Barudan, Happy, or SWF) typically cannot read PES files.

Which one should you request?

If you are running a commercial shop with multi-head machines, you almost always want DST. If you are a hobbyist or running a small business using a Brother single-head machine, PES will make your life significantly easier.
